When faced with the challenge of staging a large bookcase in the homeowner’s music room (that’s right, a music room complete with baby grand piano) we knew we wanted to do something different. Being as the piano is virtually the only thing in this room, we wanted to play up the bookcase, but with 24 shelves to fill, we didn’t want to run the risk of having too much going on… And that’s when inspiration hit–a life-sized Christmas Advent calendar!
Using Crate & Barrel wrapping paper and bags we simply placed “gifts” in each of the 24 shelves. On each gift, we placed a traditional tag with a large graphic number or text corresponding to each of the 24 days leading up to Christmas.
We made the gift tags using card stock paper and a combination of vinyl and printed text and letters. We created visual interest by using a mix of both modern and vintage fonts in various layouts. To achieve a more varied look and stretch our budget, we used the remaining outline of the used vinyl lettering as well.
This contemporary homage to the Christmas Advent calendar serves not only as a striking backdrop to our music room but playful and festive way to celebrate the season.
Tip – if you wanted to recreate this idea in your own home use envelopes, gift bags, or boxes with lids that can be used again and again. Inside place, a dollar store gift, treat, poem, story, or suggested activity, e.g. “Go Skating”. You can have fun with it without spending a lot of money.
