So you have survived a renovation or move and are ready to take on the decorating and furnishing of your home. Budget is always an issue no matter what your personal limit is. Of course it always makes sense to buy the best that you can afford but is the best always the most expensive? My philosophy is spend the majority of the budget on what you will touch and feel every day.
Custom window treatments are typically 20% of your decorating budget. Invest in quality blinds as they will be opened and closed constantly and are the functional aspect required. Hunter Douglas has updated many of their lines this year and made them more user friendly – for example you can coordinate roller, roman, and skyline with the same fabric for a cohesive look through out while serving different functions. www.hunterdouglas.com
Beautifully sewn drapery treatments can add a real statement to the room but there are also many ready-mades out there that are wonderful and can be customized for your space for a fraction of the cost. Adding trim, grommets, hand sewn rings – the options are endless to make a panel perfect for your home. My favourite haunt for ready-made drapes is Fabricland as they are all lined, 96” long and constantly go on sale for 50% off! Same as your headboard – get creative with this piece and you may not have to spend a lot, if any, money. When there is a really tight budget I often use paint and art/shelf/pillows to create a headboard.
When it comes to furniture, custom pieces through a designer are often less expensive than buying from a showroom (as there is no overhead) and there are just so many more options with fabric and finishes. Whittaker Furniture (www.whittakerdesigns.com) is a great quality line of Canadian furniture that AMR carries and is rated for any J. Ennis fabric, another Canadian company (www.jennisfabrics.com). It also allows you to get exactly what you need and something uniquely yours.
Best advice of all? Have a complete furniture plan from the start allows you to spend wisely and find the perfect quality piece.
