I recently received a question via email about updating a bathroom in a historic home in Eastern Canada. Thought I would post some of what I replied to the client for anyone else looking to be inspired with updating their own bathroom…
Tips to update a country bathroom…
Replace the mirror with a darker framed piece that is slightly wider and the light and hardware to oil rubbed bronze pieces to add some depth to the vanity area. Use a dark stained corner laundry basket on the bottom shelf and a group of tall glass vases with sand etc on the top shelf to fill in the spaces.
Install a chandelier over the tub and two large pieces of art on each wall framed in a finish to match the mirror with large white matting. This will create a nice focal point when you walk in the room.
Use two large baskets on the bottom shelf to ground it the furniture piece and give you some hidden storage for TP etc. Pull the colour from your vanity mirror to this area with darker towels grouped with white soaps, cotton balls and candles in glass jars. Remove the current art piece from above and hang a phrase or rectangular photo frame low to the top of the shelf to create a grouping with your current photo frames.
Install a floating shelf over the toilet area and hang the photo collage (currently over the TP holder) over it. Use a vase with willow or bamboo to fill in the corner beside the toilet and pull the darker finish to this side of the room.
