The Adventure of a Lifetime
It was both an endurance test and a total reset - our four-day hike into the Grand Canyon was unlike anything I’ve ever done. Over 27 miles, my oldest daughter and I made our way through one of the most iconic natural wonders on the planet, with one full day dedicated to swimming and relaxing by the Colorado River. Total bliss.
The Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World for good reason. Carved over millions of years by the Colorado River, its towering walls reveal almost two billion years of Earth’s history. The rock layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale each tell their own story. Volcanic activity is layered in deep streaks of black lava, adding even more contrast and drama to the landscape.
What surprised me most? The colour. I went in expecting a lot of red rock (and yes, that’s stunning), but I wasn’t prepared for the full spectrum. Rusty oranges, fiery reds, soft pinks, deep blues, and purples from mineral-rich stone, black volcanic seams, and bursts of lush green where desert plants thrive. It felt like walking through a natural design palette that shifted with every hour of sunlight.
Magic in the Moments
I loved going back to my roots and sleeping under the stars with skies so dark and clear they looked almost painted with stars. One morning, we started hiking EARLY in the morning and found ourselves walking alongside a herd of deer in the dark. Their quiet presence was a beautiful reminder of how alive the canyon really is.
Sisterhood on the Trail
The group of women we shared this journey with truly made the experience unforgettable. Fierce women from all walks of life, each with their reasons for being there. We laughed a lot, lifted each other, and formed connections that made the challenge so much more meaningful.
Bringing It All Back Home
Coming back, I feel completely recharged. The Grand Canyon reminded me that great design, like nature, is all about layers. Layers of history, texture, contrast, and meaning. You’ll see that reflected even stronger in my work moving forward: richer colour palettes, unexpected textures, and grounded spaces that tell a story.
